In light of ongoing news of the murder enquiry in Ipswich, Suffolk, I have already received three separate jokes about this tragic situation.
Is it that people de-humanise these women and make sick jokes because they are prostitutes?

i think you're right, fervid: the language demeans. these women in the press are prostitutes first and women second....a long, long way second though.
actually, i don't agree that this kind of humour is cathartic at all, and nor is it meant to be: i think it's ignorant, ugly, cruel. and if someone sent me jokes like that i'd tackle them about it.

I agree with trolly and fervid. I understand 'Gallows humour'of those having to deal personally with horror - They need a safetly valve. But as for the rest of us - Hard to see an excuse....

Sick jokes are one way of coming to terms with things. It's like a catharsis, but perhaps there may be more creative ways to release tension.
